Commissioners dole out PILT funds

By Michael Howell

After listening to about four hours of requests from various county departments for allocations out of the latest deposit into county coffers of $606,000 in PILT funds, the County Commissioners granted most every request except for two which were still funded, but at reduced amounts. More than half the funds, $336,000, was not allocated and will remain in the coffers as part of the general fund reserves. More...

New 911 Center holds open house

By Michael Howell

On Monday, December 14, the public got a chance to view the new abode of the County’s 911 emergency call center. Commissioner Jim Rokosch, who was on hand with the other Commissioners for the opening, was especially proud of the fact that the $800,000 improvement project was pulled off without raising anyone’s taxes and was designed to meet the County’s needs for the next 20 years. Room for band and music programs at Stevi High still a quandary

At a special meeting held Thursday, December 17, the Stevensville School Board considered a motion to take out a loan of $860,000 over 10 years to pay for the High School’s share of a band and choir facility as part of the Elementary School building project. This comes on the heels of the recent defeat of an $860,000 High School building bond designed to do just that. State statutes would require this loan proposal to gain voter approval as well. The only difference would be that taxes would not go up to pay for construction as they would under the bond proposal. Instead, the loan would be paid off over 10 years, at the rate of about $100,000 annually, out of the school’s general fund. The Board of Trustees split in a 4 to 4 vote over placing the proposal on the ballot and the motion died due to lack of a majority. More...

Council balks at paying for lime

By Michael Howell

At its last meeting on Tuesday, December 15, the Hamilton City Council balked at paying for the lime that was used on the Hieronymous Park trail project. Although the Mayor had signed a change order on the construction project to add $6,900 worth of lime to the trail pavement mixture, the matter had not come before the Council and that did not sit well with Councilor Nancy Joy Hendrickson. She offered an amendment to the motion to pay the bills that would strike the $6,900 from the money that was owed to Specialty Excavating, the company doing the trail work. More...
