Mountain lions encroaching on both sides of valley

Lion hunting dogs shot up Bear Creek

In the past few weeks a horse, a dog and two sheep have been attacked by mountain lions on both sides of the valley. A mountain lion has killed a dog and possibly led to the death of a horse up Bear Creek southwest of Victor. Two lion hounds set loose to track the cat a few days later were shot while running on private property in the area. In a separate incident on the other side of the valley a mountain lion has killed two sheep in a pen right next to a ranch house on South Burnt Fork Road east of Stevensville. More...

Die off of East Fork bighorn sheep may be averted

County and FS come to agreement over West Fork right of way clearance

Ravalli County and the Bitterroot National Forest have come to a mutual agreement for disposal of the timber cut along the Highway right of way up the West Fork of the Bitterroot. The county agreed to purchase the timber removed from the easement at the price of appraisal and then re-sell it to the Darby School District at the same price. The agencies also arrived at a mutually agreeable plan of action for completing the project which was placed on hold last March pending a federal investigation into complaints of cutting on Forest Service land outside the right of way and potential timber theft. Both parties stipulated that this agreement would not be taken as a precedent for future projects and was clearly aimed only at completing the current West Fork project. More...

County signs mutual aid agreement with other counties

Ravalli County Commissioners signed on last week to a mutual aid agreement with several other western Montana counties, including Deer Lodge, Flathead, Granite, Lake, Lincoln, Mineral, Missoula, Powell, Sanders, and Butte Silver Bow counties and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. The compact provides for mutual assistance in disaster and emergencies. More...
