Judge gives green light to Fuel Reduction Project on Middle East Fork

U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy ruled last Friday in Missoula that the U.S. Forest Service could move forward with implementing the Middle East Fork Hazardous Fuels Project while he considers a case filed against the agency that questions the legitimacy of the agency's decision making process. Friends of the Bitterroot, a local conservation group, and the WildWest Institute (formerly Native Forest Network and the Ecology Center), filed suit claiming that the decision process violated federal environmental laws by committing resources before a decision was actually made, by not taking a hard look at the condition of the soils, by censoring contrary science and selectively excluding members of the public from the process. Firefighters' memorial dedicated

A dedication program was held at Stevensville's River Park on July 4, at which a memorial was unveiled honoring aerial firefighters Captain John Sieglinger and 1st Officer Robert Shaw, who lost their lives in a tanker plane crash on St. Joseph Mountain while fighting fires in the area in 1991. The memorial plaque and accompanying covered picnic pavilion was the result of an Eagle Scout Project by local scout Dallas Fadely. More...

Planning Board begins hearing on county's largest subdivision

The Ravalli County Planning Board got an earful last week from members of the public who turned out for a public hearing on one of the largest subdivisions ever proposed in the county. Members of the public packed the Hamilton Middle School auditorium last Wednesday to participate in consideration of the Aspen Springs subdivision in the Eight-Mile area east of Florence. More...

Councilor Scott acquitted of misdemeanor assault charge

Hamilton City Councilor Bob Scott was acquitted of misdemeanor assault charges following a two-day trial last week. The charges stemmed from an encounter with city employee Chris Cobb-Taggart following a Public Works Committee meeting concerning a proposed subdivision near Scott's house. Cobb-Taggart accused Scott of assaulting her after the meeting by pressing on a book that was resting on her lap and hurting her legs. More...
